The City Council is hosting a listening session on May 22 as the first step in an ongoing engagement process to evaluate and improve policing in Modesto. Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on Saturday, May 22 at 10 a.m. in person at Council Chambers or online via Zoom.
In policing, the importance of building trust is the foundational principle underlying the fabric of a community’s sense of safety. Over the course of the past several years, the Modesto Police Department (MPD) has embedded community engagement and trust-building initiatives into the day-to-day work of an officer to help promote trust. However, there is still work to be done.
Recent events, both nationally and locally in Modesto, have re-invigorated an important discussion around police use of force, police-community relations, and reform. To reaffirm the City’s commitment to maintaining community trust in the City and the police department, Mayor Sue Zwahlen announced the launch of Forward Together, a community engagement process to solicit feedback from the community on police-community relations. The May 22 event is the first step in a long-term community conversation. Follow and participate in the discussion by visiting www.modestogov.com/forwardtogether
