Biography
Interim Fire Chief Shanon Evans began his fire service career in 1995 with the Westport Fire District as a volunteer firefighter, working his way through the ranks and developing a deep passion for community service. In August 2001, he joined the Modesto Fire Department as a full-time firefighter, advancing through the positions of Firefighter Relief, Engineer, Engineer Relief, Captain, Battalion Chief, and ultimately Deputy Chief in September 2024.
During his tenure as an Engineer, he was among the first to serve as a fire investigator on a 24-hour shift, helping shape that program during its early development. He spent several years driving out of Station 1, where he worked closely with probationary firefighters rotating through the station. Known as a steady mentor, he played a meaningful role in shaping the early careers of many new firefighters. Throughout his career, he has been a strong advocate for mental health, consistently prioritizing the well-being and resilience of his peers.
In addition to serving as Interim Fire Chief for the Modesto Fire Department, he continues to lead the Westport Fire District as its Fire Chief. There, he oversees approximately 55 volunteer firefighters, investing in the next generation of the fire service by training, mentoring, and helping volunteers build successful pathways into full-time firefighting careers.
Chief Evans is a devoted husband and father of four, and he recently became a proud grandfather to a baby girl in November 2025. When he’s not serving his community, he enjoys raising cattle and spending quality time with his family.
