1. Do I need a Special Event Permit?

If your event is open to the public and includes entertainment such as live or amplified music, DJs, dancing to live or recorded music, presentations by performers, carnival rides, circus act or other activities meant to be attended by members of the public, then you will need a Special Event Entertainment Permit to hold your event. Parades and sporting events do not require a Special Event permit, although parades require their own permit which can be found on Modesto Police Department forms and applications page.

2. If I have a valid Business Entertainment Permit, but I am holding a Special Event outside of my business facility, do I need a Special Event Permit?

Yes. Your Business Entertainment Permit is valid within your business facility, but if any part of your event will take place any area outside of your business facility, such as a patio or parking lot adjacent to your facility, you will need to apply for a Special Event Permit to cover that event.

3. How long does the Entertainment Permit process take?

Entertainment staff ask for a minimum of 45 days to process your Special Event Entertainment Permit application. This process can be lengthy, with several City Departments required to view the application and provide comments. All new applications must also go before the Entertainment Commission, which meets twice monthly, in order to receive final approval. Be certain to submit your paper work well in advance of your desired event date.
