Modesto is Planning for the Future - And We Want Your Input!

The City of Modesto is entering the next phase of its General Plan Update, a long-term roadmap that guides how and where our community will grow over the next 25 years. This phase focuses on three land use alternatives - exploring different ways Modesto could grow to meet future housing, jobs, and community needs.

The proposed land use alternatives were designed to ensure that Modesto’s future growth is well-planned and economically balanced and supports the creation of new jobs, increased revenue, enhanced amenities, and a variety of housing options for current and future residents.

Despite being the county seat, Modesto’s growth hasn't grown significantly since the 1990s, leading to the loss of economic opportunities to nearby cities. With limited vacant land available, new areas for development are needed to support future growth. Identifying potential growth areas outside City boundaries will complement the infill and downtown revitalization projects the City already has underway.

The City is holding a series of community meetings to share the land use alternatives, discuss ways to increase the City’s regional competitiveness, and gather input from the community. We hope you can attend as your feedback is important! Together, we can create a future Modesto that’s sustainable, inclusive, and ready for the generations to come. You can learn more and stay involved by visiting the General Plan website.
