Black History Month has been officially celebrated in the United States since 1976 in order to promote the cultural, economic, political, and social contributions made by our black community to help build this great nation.
The theme for Black History Month 2024 is “African Americans and the Arts,” which highlights the profound impact of African Americans in various artistic and cultural expressions, including visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, language, film, music, architecture, culinary arts, and other forms of cultural expression.
African American arts have historically used art as a powerful tool to preserve history and promote empowerment. This theme is infused with the lived experiences of African, Caribbean, and Black American communities, showcasing their pivotal role in shaping artistic and cultural movements worldwide.
The City of Modesto is committed to equity and inclusion and continues to work toward becoming an inclusive community in which all residents, past, present, and future, are respected and recognized for their contributions to our community and country.
The Modesto City Council hereby proclaims the month of February 2024 as Black History Month in the City of Modesto and urges all our residents to commit to working toward the ideals of equality, freedom, unity, and the abundance of opportunities that our country represents.
