The City of Modesto recently released its new and improved Geographic Information System (GIS) website (www.modestogov.com/itd/gis). Similar in functionality to the popular web map applications such as Google Maps or Bing Maps, the City’s GIS application is an interactive map that will allows you to pan, zoom in/out, and search map information specific to Modesto.
The City’s GIS website enables you to search for locations by address, determine what Council District you live in, identify zoning designations, find parks or schools, or view aerial photography of the Modesto area. This new site was planned, designed, and built by City Information Technology staff using ESRI's ArcGIS Server technology. Be sure to visit the website (www.modestogov.com/itd/gis) and enjoy the modern look and feel to the website. Upon the first visit to the website, users will be directed to download a one-time Silverlight plug-in directly from Microsoft via a link provided on the website.
The ability to extend this mapping capability to the public is not new; the City has offered a public GIS web site since 2003. However, this current release offers expanded functionality and many aesthetic improvements.
